‘Got away with one’… Callum Davidson thinks Celtic got a favourable VAR decision vs Motherwell yesterday

It’s not very often that Celtic fans will say that they get the rub of the green whenever it comes to VAR decisions since the technology was introduced just over a year ago now.

In fact, many will say that despite the amount of VAR decisions that have gone against their club, they will say it’s incredible how it has not cost them trophies, never mind points.

However, it seems that in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Motherwell, the video referee might have actually done Celtic a favour after it didn’t get involved in an ankle-high challenge made by Greg Taylor.

That’s according to former St Johnstone manager and now BBC pundit, Callum Davidson. Davidson thinks that whilst the decision not to get involved was correct by VAR, he also believes Taylor was fortunate not to see red.

Davidson said [BBC Sportscene], “I think you want to see the referee referee the game. And for me, if you want to stop it every time for VAR.

“Obviously being a defender myself, you want to see people going for tackles. There wasn’t any malice in it. It was just a slightly mistimed tackle.

“He maybe got away with one, but in the end, I’d rather the referee refereed the decision.”

To be honest, Taylor was quite fortunate not to stay on the park. When you look at how Ross County received a red for a similar type of challenge a few weeks ago if VAR had intervened.

However, even with that slight rub of the green, Celtic still couldn’t manage to overcome a Motherwell side who are languishing close to the relegation zone this early into the season.

It’s not the first time Celtic have struggled against a bottom-of-the-table side at Paradise this season. A 0-0 draw with St Johnstone back in August recorded Brendan Rodgers‘ first dropped points since returning to the Hoops.

And another draw yesterday will give the Celtic manager some food for thought as he nears ever closer to the January transfer window.
