Report: Rangers favourites to sign £15m Championship striker

Rangers are favourites to sign Britt Assombalonga.

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who say the Middlesbrough striker is close to agreeing terms with the Ibrox club.

The 28-year-old reportedly earns £38,000 per week at the Riverside, and TEAMtalk claim that he will be willing to take a significant wage cut in order to seal a move north.

They say he’s set to leave Boro and is the subject of interest from numerous Championship clubs as well as clubs in Belgium and Germany, but that Ibrox is his likeliest destination.

While Alfredo Morelos is a key man at Ibrox and he’s been supplemented upfront by the likes of Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe, Rangers’ success this season has been built more on defensive solidity and midfield tenacity than on goalscoring feats.

The Colombian, who was linked with West Ham and Leicester City by the Scottish Sun in April 2020, is the club’s second-top goalscorer this season with 16 goals in 40 games. It’s right-back James Tavernier who leads their goalscoring chart with 17 goals in 42 appearances.

If Congolose international Assombalonga, who cost Boro £15m when he signed from Nottingham Forest in July 2017, does arrive at Ibrox Gerrard will have another goalscoring outlet as he aims to retain Rangers’ Premiership title.

Assombalonga, who has eight caps for his country, has scored 47 goals in 159 games for the Championship side since being signed by Garry Monk.
