‘Interesting shout’… BBC pundit thinks 24-year-old Celtic player could ‘wriggle’ into Scotland’s Euro 2024 squad

With Scotland qualifying for the Euros in Germany next month, there are a few Celtic players that Steve Clarke will look to take with him.

Callum McGregor is a certainty. The Celtic midfielder has been outstanding for Scotland in this qualifying campaign.

Greg Taylor has also stepped in when required but his place is under threat simply due to the options Steve Clarke has at his disposal.

Anthony Ralston is another who could make the squad. The Hoops fullback has made six appearances for Scotland after his form dramatically improved under Ange Postecoglou.

But there is a Celtic player that BBC pundit, Lewis Irons, has an outside chance of making the trip to Germany after impressing in the green and white hoops in his 12 apperances so far this season.

Irons said [BBC Sportsound], “Interesting shout, I went with David Turnbull. He’s been around the squads before. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him maybe wriggle into the squad.

Brendan Rodgers seems to like him. There’s an injury to Hatate at the moment that may present a bit more of an opportunity for him.

“I mean, he’s top scorer with Matt O’Riley and he’s played half the minutes. So he’s shown he’s got something and he could have a big second half of the season for Celtic.

“So I think it wouldn’t be surprising to see him push for a place.”

David Turnbull’s Celtic future

There is no doubt that Turnbull has talent. That is not what is in question when it comes to the discussion surrounding the Celtic midfielder.

His goalscoring record speaks for itself but it is the other parts of his game that seems to let him down. Turnbull isn’t as dynamic as the likes of Hatate and he doesn’t have the passing ability of O’Riley but he certainly offers Brendan Rodgers a different option.

Whether Turnbull signs a new contract before the summer is uncertain. The 24-year-old seems fairly laid back about his future and it seems that the ball is in his court.

With ten caps already to his name, Turnbull has the ability to play at international level but it seems that to force his way into Clarke’s squad, he may well have to leave Celtic to do that.

In other news, Mark Guidi says he’s been told by people at Celtic that £3m summer signing is not good enough
