Chris Sutton is not convinced 24-year-old player can improve enough to play for Celtic

David Turnbull is a player who really divides opinion amongst the Celtic fans, isn’t he? Despite his terrific goalscoring return, there are many who just aren’t convinced that he has enough about him to be a first-team player at Celtic.

I have said repeatedly on TBR Celtic that I am a fan of Turnbull and that he does have the quality to make it at the club.

But in the pundit world, it seems that there are just some things that the Celtic midfielder must improve on to help him become a regular under Brendan Rodgers.

Chris Sutton is the latest in a long line of pundits queuing up to tell Turnbull what to do to make it at Celtic. And after his goal against Aberdeen, Sutton raised the question again of whether or not Turnbull can play for Rodgers.

Sutton said [Sky Sports], “He’s so good isn’t he? His timing of the run in the box. There are just other areas of his game which he really needs to improve on.

“And at his age, it’s whether that’s really possible.”

What does David Turnbull need to improve upon at Celtic?

There are many reasons why Turnbull seems to be in and out of the Celtic team. But the main one is that I just don’t think he is consistent enough when he starts.

At the beginning of the season, he performed well against Ross County, scored two goals and in the next match against Aberdeen he was hooked at half-time.

There have been suggestions that Turnbull simply doesn’t have the fitness to be able to command a place in the Celtic midfield.

In fact, Brendan Rodgers himself said that the reason he chose Paulo Bernardo to start against Atletico last Tuesday is because he needed a ball winner in the middle of the park.

Whatever it is Turnbull needs to work on, if the 24-year-old wants to earn a new deal at Celtic and forge a career at the club he needs to start working at improving on the areas that have been highlighted to him or he could find himself at a new club come next summer.
