Barry Ferguson says ‘quality’ 24-year-old will need to leave Celtic to rescue his international career

The debate over who should be offered a new Celtic contract continues tonight as Barry Ferguson tells one player that he should leave the club to rescue his international career.

The former Rangers hero was speaking about 24-year-old midfielder David Turnbull and whether or not he will extend his stay in Glasgow when Ferguson said he is likely to become a bench player when Brendan Rodgers has a full quota of midfielders to choose from.

Ferguson said [The Go Radio Football Show], “I think he’s got a decision to make come January or even next summer. I think he’s got real quality.

“If he’s got ambitions to break back into that Scotland squad he needs to be playing week in, week out.

“I just believe if everybody’s fit in that midfield area the strongest three is obviously McGregor, O’Riley and Hatate and I just think he’ll be coming off the bench more than he would be starting.

“So I think it’s going to be a big decision that David’s going to be having to make. And whether that’s going down to England or going abroad maybe, if he’s got any ambitions to get back into that Scotland squad he’s going to need to play on a regular basis.”

The debate over whether or not Turnbull will stay on at Celtic will not be resolved until either a contract is signed or he is told to leave.

One thing is for sure, his goals are making a good case for him to be dealt in at Celtic even though his goal celebration on Wednesday night irked some supporters.

I have said on TBR Celtic that I believe that Turnbull is one of three players who is an ideal replacement for the injured Reo Hatate.

So far, he hasn’t let Brendan Rodgers down. Let’s hope that continues tomorrow night as Celtic face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
