‘Not nice for him’… John Hartson thinks Celtic could sell ‘exceptionally quick’ player in January

With Brendan Rodgers looking to trim the Celtic squad this January, the debate will rage on who the manager will keep and who will be allowed to leave the club.

TBR Celtic offered five names that we believe could be shown the exit door and John Hartson has agreed with one of them.

The former Celtic hero was speaking about Mikey Johnston and whilst Hartson is a fan of the winger, failing to impress Rodgers and Neil Lennon means that Hartson believes he will be allowed to leave the club in January.

Hartson said [The Go Radio Football Show], “Well, Mikey Johnston, for me, he gets opportunities and he does it fits and starts some games. He’s exceptionally quick and he gets himself into good positions.

“The boy can play. There’s no doubt that he has talent. But how many opportunities do you give this lad before you say look, you’re gonna have to look somewhere else?

“I think Brendan Rodgers has given him several opportunities [in his first spell] and Neil Lennon did the same.

“So for me, as I said, it’s not nice for him, but I’m trying to tell it as it is, I think he might be one of the players that they’d love to get rid of.”

Johnston certainly seems to have the magic touch when appearing for the Republic of Ireland on international duty.

Man-of-the-match performances against Gibraltar and New Zealand don’t seem to have put him any closer to getting regular football under Rodgers this season.

Featuring for 25 minutes against Hibs, Johnston again failed to impress and he hasn’t been seen in a Celtic jersey since.

The winger is clearly enjoying life as an international player but it seems that if he wants to continue representing his country, a Celtic exit is probably the best move for him.

In other news, Mark Guidi says he’s been told by people at Celtic that £3m summer signing is not good enough
