Owen Hargreaves says Spurs have a ‘fabulous’ talent who Conte can turn into a ‘huge threat’

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been described as a “fabulous” player by BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves.

The Spurs ace helped his side secure a 1-1 draw against Sporting CP in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Tottenham were dismal in the first half, with Marcus Edwards opening the scoring for Sporting against his former club.

However, Spurs were much better in the second half, with Bentancur one of the catalysts for his side’s improvement.

Early in the second half, the Uruguayan embarked on a positive run into the box that resulted in Eric Dier testing the opposition goalkeeper.

This seemed to lift Spurs up as they worked up the gears, and Bentancur went on to score the equaliser for his side.

Ivan Perisic swung in a corner and the £20million midfielder outjumped Antonio Adan to head in from six yards out.

In wake of Harry Kane’s disallowed injury-time goal, Bentancur’s contributions helped keep Spurs top of the group.

Hargreaves praised the 25-year-old on BT Sport at full-time, saying: “Bentancur doesn’t get many goals but he’s fabulous player.

“If he can add goals to his game, he’ll be a huge threat.”

Admittedly, Bentancur goals have been rare so far. To date, he has two from 34 Tottenham outings.

Nonetheless, both of those goals have come this season, so he’s certainly on the right track.

Antonio Conte is one of the best coaches in the world, and he and his staff will no doubt look to get Bentancur working on getting more goals.

Bentancur shining under the radar

Aside from scoring the equaliser, Bentancur clocked up some good stats against Sporting, as per Whoscored.

He registered three efforts during the course of the match, one of those obviously finding the back of the net.

Bentancur also completed one dribble, took 88 touches, made 73 passes and delivered five long balls, four of which found their target.

And in terms of defensive contributions, he weighed in with four tackles.
