‘I wouldn’t be surprised’… Pundit reckons ‘outstanding’ 24-year-old could leave Liverpool at the end of the season

Caoimhin Kelleher is at a bit of a crossroads in his career right now.

The Irishman has made his name as a very reliable second-choice goalkeeper for Liverpool in recent years, but at the age of 24 now, he needs to map out the rest of his career.

As great a club as Liverpool are, no player wants to spend their entire life watching from the bench, and Kelleher may be looking to move on before too long.

Speaking on The RedMen TV, Chris Kirkland has given his verdict on this situation, and he says that he wouldn’t be at all surprised if Kelleher did decide it was time to leave Liverpool come the end of the season.

Kelleher could go

Kirkland gave his verdict on the goalkeeper.

“I know what you’re saying with Caoimhin, I’ve seen him play since the U18s. Caoimhin, I got asked this and I was half surprised he didn’t move in the summer. There was interest in him. I think next summer they have a big, big, not a problem,” Kirkland said.

“He’s been that good of a servant and if he said to the club he wants to move on they would do it, that’s the way Liverpool are, they’re fair. I think next summer could be the one. You’re not going to play in front of Ali, if he stays whoever comes in isn’t going to play many games. I’m sure there’s a plan, there always has been a plan, but the club will do right by what Caoimhin wants because he’s been an outstanding, loyal servant to the club. What is he now, 24? You need to be playing at his age. He’ll play 15 games this season, will he be happy with that long-term? Probably not, we’ll see, but I wouldn’t be surprised either way in the summer.”

Spread his wings

Kirkland is absolutely right, it probably is time for Kelleher to start thinking about leaving Liverpool.

Alisson isn’t going anywhere as the Reds’ number one anytime soon, and Kelleher won’t want to spend his entire career playing second-fiddle.

Any professional will want to carve out their own legacy and play at the top-level, and Kelleher is more than good enough to do that away from Anfield.

Don’t be shocked if the Irishman looks to move on in the summer.
