Chris Sutton says Celtic wouldn’t accept ‘ten times’ the fee they paid for ‘amazing’ 23-year-old player

With most of the transfer chat surrounding Celtic and their need to strengthen in the January window, Chris Sutton has warned clubs casting admiring glances to one of Brendan Rodgers’ players that he won’t be sold on the cheap.

The former Celtic hero was discussing Rodgers’ potential transfer business in the coming window when he said that the Hoops board would not even consider selling one of their star players for even ‘ten times’ what they paid for him.

Sutton said [Daily Record], “Rodgers wants ‘quality’, but doesn’t every manager? I’d like to see how he does it. In the summer the talk was about signing more prospects when they needed upgrades.

“But sometimes they are one and the same. Matt O’Riley arrived as a prospect for just £1.5m.

“Two years on and you wouldn’t accept 10 times that amount to sell him.”

Celtic will not sell Matt O’Riley in January

Ok, let me rephrase that. Celtic will not sell Matt O’Riley in January unless they get a ridiculous bid for him.

The £10m bid made by Leeds United in the summer looks like chicken feed now. Holding his own in the Champions League, the 23-year-old is now a fully-fledged Danish international after making his debut last week.

Adding goals to his game, O’Riley is now one of Celtic’s best players, if not the best player, at the club and his talent shines through in almost every single game he plays.

Using my noodle, Sutton says Celtic won’t accept anything £11.5m for the ‘amazing‘ O’Riley. I would say Celtic would be foolish to accept anything less than £20m for the Danish international midfielder.

With Crystal Palace and teams across Europe circling, O’Riley has the potential of becoming Celtic’s most expensive transfer in their history after Kieran Tierney.

In other news, Chris Sutton tells Celtic there is a player at Leicester City who could fill in for Kyogo Furuhashi in January
