‘Not so much me’… ‘Outstanding’ 25-year-old player rules himself out of taking penalties for Celtic

As Celtic rue another missed penalty in the Scottish Premiership, Brendan Rodgers has a headache about who he should place in charge of spot-kick duties.

And when you look at the abundance of talent at Celtic who can strike a dead ball, it’s quite incredible that Rodgers finds himself trying to solve a penalty problem.

So far, Reo Hatate, Luis Palma and David Turnbull have all missed from twelve yards and after Palma missed again on Saturday, Cameron Carter-Vickers says that he’s not the one who should be charged with taking them.

The big American international was asked if he could be the one to step up next to the penalty spot and he couldn’t have distanced himself from the responsibility quick enough.

Carter-Vickers said [Daily Record], “Not really. I’m a clean enough striker of a ball but it’s definitely something we need to improve on. Players do practise them, not so much me because I am quite far down the pecking order probably.

“But the players who are likely to take the penalties definitely practise them. Penalties are always a great chance to score a goal.

“We have missed a few this season but all we can do is give our penalty taker as much confidence as we can. With penalties so much of it comes down to confidence.

“Whoever is taking them needs to be really confident when he steps up.”

For me, your striker should be the one who steps up to take charge in this situation. Surely having a player who knows where the back of the net is should be the one who takes the free hit from the spot?

Whoever Rodgers decides to pick, he will know that Celtic cannot continue to squander these chances. His team got away with it this weekend after Rangers blew it against Aberdeen.

The next time, they might not be so lucky.
