100% duels won, 97% passing accuracy… 25-year-old Celtic player was brilliant vs Motherwell

Celtic’s draw with Motherwell was bitterly disappointing at the weekend.

For the second time this season, Celtic dropped points at home against a team that is struggling at the bottom of the table.

The match stats showed that Celtic were imperious. 80.8% possession, 20 shots on goal with only four on target and only two clear-cut chances tell the tale of the match. [Sky Sports]

Which is why it is no surprise that Celtic’s top performer on the day wasn’t one of the frontmen. As the wingers huffed and puffed against The Steelmen, Kyogo Furuhashi was left with no service to make his mark on the game.

And it didn’t make any difference when Brendan Rodgers made the decision to take off the Japanese striker and replace him with Mikey Johnston.

Penetration was still lacking and it took a David Turnbull penalty to break the deadlock. However, it was Cameron Carter-Vickers who shone once more for Celtic on a day full of dark disappointment.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was excellent for Celtic vs Motherwell

The US defender has proven once more just how important he is to Celtic with a performance right out of the top drawer.

Rated 7.8 by Fotmob, the 25-year-old had 106 touches of the ball and had an incredible passing accuracy of 97%.

Carter-Vickers made 14 passes into Motherwell’s final third as he did his best to break down a stubborn defence and also successfully completed two out of three long balls.

Defensively, the ‘man mountain‘ of a defender was imperious. Winning six out six of his duels, Carter-Vickers also made five clearances, eight ball recoveries, completed four defensive actions and three clearances.

He was simply superb for Celtic on Saturday.

The performance against Motherwell wasn’t a one-off. These types of displays by Carter-Vickers are very common and it proves just how important he is for Celtic.

Against Hearts last month, CCV won all of his attempted tackles as Celtic won in the capital. When he returned from injury against Lazio last month, he was greeted with heroes welcome by the Celtic support.

Even in the 6-0 loss to Atletico Madrid, Carter-Vickers didn’t let his standards drop as he gave everything against the Spanish giants.

Even the American media are loving the Celtic defender as he returned to international duty last week.

With every passing game, Carter-Vickers shows that the £6m Celtic pain Tottenham for him was a superb piece of business by the Parkhead club and who knows, he could be a future Celtic captain if he hangs around the club long enough.
