‘Issues around’: Brendan Rodgers explains why Cameron Carter-Vickers was left out of Celtic squad vs St Mirren

The omission of Cameron Carter-Vickers from Celtic’s matchday squad against St Mirren certainly raised a few eyebrows tonight.

Many Celtic fans were wondering just where the US international was as they hoped to watch Celtic take all three points and keep daylight between themselves and Rangers at the top of the table.

Was he being rested? Is there an injury issue? Brendan Rodgers was speaking pre-match and explained exactly why Carter-Vickers was missing tonight.

Rodgers said [BBC], “I’m just freshening the team up. We’ve got a good squad of players.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is still working on his knee and some of the issues around that – it’s a chance for him to recover and then he’ll be ready for the weekend and beyond that.”

So it seems that Carter-Vickers’ knee is causing him some issues again. The American has been excellent since returning to first-team duty in October.

Barring his mistake against Lazio in the Champions League, Carter-Vickers has been a ‘man mountain’ at the back for Celtic.

Domestically, the American has been imperious in helping Celtic build five-point lead at the top of the table.

Celtic ran out eventual winners against The Buddies tonight but despite an early scare, quality goals from David Turnbull and Hyeongyu Oh ensured Brendan Rodgers’ side maintained their lead at the top of the table.

A late surge by Kyogo almost gave Celtic a two-goal cushion deep into added-on time but his dink was well saved by the St Mirren ‘keeper.

Next up for Celtic is a tough away trip to Ross County where Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to have Carter-Vickers ready.

With Atletico Madrid now looking, Celtic will need a fit Cameron Carter-Vickers if they hope to keep their European dream alive next week.
