Celtic fans stunned by moment of genius from defender in first-half of second leg vs AZ

Celtic stumbled into the Europa League group stages with an aggregate win over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar – but fans raved about Anthony Ralston, again.

Coming into the match, Celtic were in an incredibly healthy position. A 2-0 lead from made Celtic favourites, after Kyogo netted, and an own goal.

It was an even bigger advantage just a couple of minutes into the second leg. Liel Abada squared to Kyogo to net his seventh goal in Celtic colours.

But from that point on, Celtic were somewhat poor. Two defensive howlers saw AZ come back into the match on Thursday night, in Holland.

Firstly, a long ball put Stephen Welsh in all sorts of trouble. The centre-back was unsure over whether to head it away, or allow Joe Hart to collect.

He elected the latter but by the time he decided to do so, Hart was playing catch up and had to adjust. Zakaria Aboukhlal got their first, and scored.

What have Celtic fans said about Ralston and his pass at AZ?

Not a good moment for Hart or Celtic, and it was 2-1 moments later. A innocuous cross was inexplicably turned into his own net by Starfelt.

The Sweden international had no AZ player in his vicinity, but still managed to deflect the ball past Hart into the Celtic goal. The Hoops held on.

They had Hart to thank on numerous occasions, with the ex-England man making up for his mistake with numerous, excellent saves.

It was Ralston’s gorgeous pass two minutes in that found Abada, ranging a 50-yard ball over the top of AZ’s defence. Ultimately, it was the difference.

Celtic fans took to Twitter to once again applaud Ralston, who has starred for Celtic this season. Even after the signing of Josip Juranovic.
