Tam McManus impressed by Celtic player who’s shown ‘great character’

Tam McManus was left serious impressed by the Celtic display on Wednesday night of Anthony Ralston.

The young defender played last night for the Hoops during their impressive 2-0 home win over AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their Europa League play-off qualifier.

Celtic are now in pole position to qualify for the Europa League group stages, but will need to negotiate the second leg in Holland next week.

Ralston, 22, was yet again in at right-back for Ange Postecoglou’s team.

The energetic full-back had played in the club’s first team before this campaign, but he looked a long way off ready for the senior group. However, his displays in the last month show massive improvement.

Postecoglou has been forced in many ways to play him at full-back due to a lack of options, but he’s stood up to the task exceptionally well.

The Glasgow-born defender put in an all action effort against AZ Alkmaar to contribute in both halves of the pitch.

“Ralston very good again. Great character shown by him be hard to budge on this form,” McManus wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Anthony Ralston going from strength to strength

Ralston has been magnificent in his eight appearances so far this season in all competitions.

He’s scored in each of the opening two league matches against Hearts and Dundee. Also, looked a major attacking threat in every game with his pace and enthusiasm to join in further up the pitch.

His performance against a strong opponent on Wednesday suggests this form isn’t a fluke, so he’s now a quality option in the defence.
