Report: Maurizio Sarri leading £17m race, Leeds and Everton have been linked

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims that Lazio and Maurizio Sarri are the frontrunners in the race to sign Wolfsburg star Josip Brekalo. The Croatia ace is likely to leave the German side. Lazio are at the front of the queue, though Leeds and Everton have also been linked with Brekalo.

Still only 23, Brekalo did not enjoy his best season during 2020-21 – scoring seven goals and creating four more in 33 Wolfsburg games. At Euro 2020, he was okay, coinciding with Croatia’s last 16 finish. He is certainly capable of a lot better but it appears that Wolfsburg are willing to cash in on the Croat.

Reports from Calciomercato claim Leeds want Brekalo, while The Express said in May that Everton were looking at Brekalo. But the latest report from Pedulla says Lazio are winning the race – with Brekalo definitely ‘leaving’. A fee of £17million, or a loan-to-buy deal, will be accepted by Wolfsburg.

Do Leeds and Everton need to get a move on as Lazio close in on Brekalo?

Since being first linked with a move for the Wolfsburg talent, Everton have brought in Andros Townsend on a free and Demarai Gray from Bayer Leverkusen. While Everton fans are sceptical and believe their club can do better, it gives Everton some much-needed depth.

It also ends their need for wingers. The Toffees now have plenty of options out wide, even after the sale of Bernard. So, Everton do not need to worry about Brekalo. Leeds, might want too. Helder Costa is being linked with a move to Valencia – replacing him with Brekalo would be good business.
