Benfica boss pays huge compliment to Liverpool as Fabio Capello makes Anfield claim

Liverpool reached the Champions League semi-finals by seeing off Benfica 6-4 on aggregate on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges, who led 3-1 from the first leg in Lisbon last week, got off to a great start at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a 21st-minute lead from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner.

Goncalo Ramos then equalised for the visitors in the 32nd minute after a VAR check.

However, Liverpool regained their lead in the 55th minute thanks to some calamitous Benfica defending.

Diogo Jota played a low ball into the box for the unmarked Roberto Firmino to rifle in at the back post.

Then, 10 minutes later, the Brazilian produced a lovely cushioned finish from a superb Kostas Tsimikas cross.

Things got nervy for Liverpool in the latter stages as Benfica struck twice to make it 3-3 on the night.

First Roman Yaremchuk netted after being kept onside by Joe Gomez, then Nunez fired in from a tight angle.

Despite being level on the night, Benfica couldn’t build on it, and so Liverpool progressed.

“One of the best teams in the world”

After the game, coach Nelson Verissimo acknowledged that they’d lost to one of the best sides in the world.

“We had never got this far in this format of the Champions League,” the Liverpool Echo quotes him as saying.

“The team had to be proud of what we have done.

“Started with a difficult group, we had Barcelona and the team qualified to the next round which is credit to the players and previous coaching staff.

“We had Ajax in the next round and got through on merit and then we got Liverpool, one of the best teams in the world.

“We knew it was a very steep mountain, we believed it was possible.

“The result we had at Estadio da Luz meant we started at a big disadvantage.

“We needed to score before Liverpool and if this happened we could perhaps relax more and make them uncomfortable but the opposite happened.”

Legendary manager Fabio Capello also sung Liverpool’s praises, on Sky Sport Italia via Football Italia.

When asked whether Klopp has the best attack in Europe, he replied: “It’s the most entertaining one.

“When they put the ball in the box, there isn’t a player who isn’t ready to score.

“At Anfield, they fulfil their attacking mentality in the best possible way.”

Real Madrid and Man City will contest the other tie.
