Michael Owen and Steve McManaman react as Liverpool overcome Benfica in crazy encounter

Liverpool icons Michael Owen and Steve McManaman have given their verdicts as the Reds reached the Champions League semi-finals.

The Anfield cult heroes were covering Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg against Benfica on BT Sport.

Liverpool, who led 3-1 from the first leg, got off to a great start at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a 21st-minute lead from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner.

Last week’s first scorer in the first-leg once again netted thanks to a thumping header.

Goncalo Ramos then equalised for the visitors in the 32nd minute after a VAR check.

However, Liverpool regained their lead in the 55th minute thanks to some calamitous Benfica defending.

Diogo Jota played a low ball into the box for the unmarked Roberto Firmino to rifle in at the back post.

Then, 10 minutes later, the Brazilian produced a lovely cushioned finish from a superb Kostas Tsimikas cross.

Things got nervy for Liverpool in the latter stages as Benfica struck twice to make it 3-3 on the night.

First Roman Yaremchuk netted after being kept onside by Joe Gomez, then Nunez fired in from a tight angle.

“They were never in any trouble”

However, there was to be no late collapse by Liverpool, who held on to reach the final four.

“They played fine,” said Owen on BT Sport – via The Sport Review – after the final whistle.

“They conceded a couple of goals they’ll be disappointed about.

“However, we saw it in the previous round against Inter Milan, when you’re winning from the first leg and it’s quite comfortable, it’s not that easy to go and steamroller an opponent.

“They did what they had to do tonight – Jurgen Klopp will be delighted.”

McManaman added: “They were never in any trouble were they? They took the lead and they went 3-1 in front.

“It was actually a really enjoyable game and Liverpool looked like they could go through the gears whenever they wanted to. They were always very comfortable.”

Liverpool will take on Villarreal in the last four, with the first leg at Anfield on April 26 or 27.

The Reds then travel to Spain a week later.
