Wayne Rooney makes Liverpool claim before Manchester City clash

Wayne Rooney has told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (4/4; 19:20) that Liverpool can go to Manchester City and win when they meet in the Premier League this weekend.

It certainly feels as though as Sunday’s game could go a long way to deciding the destination of the Premier League title. With eight games to go, Manchester City are one point clear of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool have done amazingly well to close the gap with many handing City the title earlier in the campaign when there was some distance between the two.

The Reds have lost one game in all competitions since the turn of the year. In fact, they have failed to win one game since drawing with Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final tie back in January. That defeat came against Inter Milan when Liverpool were already 2-0 up on aggregate.

The momentum does look to be with Liverpool. But City will have home advantage. And they produced a professional performance to navigate a tricky game against Burnley at the weekend to move themselves back above the Reds.

Rooney joked that he would rather see two other sides contesting the potential title-decider. But he made a very interesting claim about Liverpool when asked about how the game will play out.

“I wish none of them was there to be honest,” he told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports. “But I think it could go either way. Liverpool are on a great run of form, as City are, but I think Liverpool can go there and win.”

Win could be massive as Rooney hints he’s backing Liverpool

Obviously, there is still plenty to play for after Sunday. But having that momentum could be crucial.

Rooney clearly expects Liverpool to give City plenty of problems this weekend. And it would certainly seem that he expects Klopp’s men to seize the initiative in the title race.
