Micah Richards makes Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold comparison after Watford win

BBC pundit Micah Richards has praised Liverpool defender Joe Gomez for his impressive performance at right-back in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Gomez was making just his second Premier League start of the season in the 2-0 win against Watford at yesterday.

His only other top-flight start in the current campaign also came at right-back and against fellow strugglers Norwich City, on a day when Alexander-Arnold wasn’t part of the squad.

With Alexander-Arnold fit enough for a place on the bench against the Hornets, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Liverpool’s number 66 return against Benfica on Tuesday night, ahead of the blockbuster Premier League clash against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

That’ll likely mean that Gomez will drop to the bench and will probably have to wait patiently for his next to chance to impress.

It’s been a frustrating campaign for the England international who, unlike Virgil van Dijk, has been able to re-establish himself in Jurgen Klopp’s best eleven following his serious knee injury, with Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate seemingly ahead of him in the centre-back pecking order.

Burt former Manchester City defender Richards praised Gomez’s performance against Roy Hodgson’s side on last night’s Match of the Day.

Liverpool’s number 12 set up the opener for Diogo Jota with a pinpoint cross which drew comparisons with one of his teammates.

Richards said: “This is the one that means the most to me just because of his injury problems.

“It’s a wonderful ball and an outstanding run. But the quality of the ball from Gomez it’s Trent-esque.

“The technique to whip it round and put it on a sixpence was worth mentioning.”
