Inter Milan ended Liverpool’s incredible unbeaten run at Anfield last night but it still wasn’t enough for the Italian champions to go through to the next round of the Champions League.

Simone Inzaghi’s side were really good in the first-leg in Milan but two late goals from Liverpool killed that game. It was always going to be difficult to overturn that at Anfield, but Inter had a go last night.

Lautaro Martinez pulled a goal back after the hour-mark and that set up a grandstand finish. However, just about a minute later, Alexis Sanchez got himself a red card and that ruined what would’ve been a sensational end to the tie.

Liverpool held on and although they lost the game, they went through to the quarter-final, which was always the aim.

Simone Inzaghi: Liverpool’s Anfield is a very difficult stadium

Right after Martinez’s stunning goal, Inzaghi really would’ve thought that his side had a chance to knock Liverpool out of the competition.

Sanchez’s sending off really hurt them, but Liverpool’s strength, especially in front of their home fans at Anfield, made it even more difficult for the visitors.

Inzaghi said after the game, as per Inter Milan’s official website: “We had a great match, in a very difficult stadium and against a very strong team.

“The boys were very good, there is a bit of regret for the first leg because the result, it was unfair from what we had seen. Liverpool seemed to have blamed the 1-0 goal but Sanchez’s dismissal affected the last half hour of play.

“The team was in the game, they had held the pitch well, suffering the right and only on inactive balls.”

Liverpool were far from their best against Inzaghi’s Inter last night and Jurgen Klopp, predictably, wasn’t a happy man after the game.

However, the Reds could’ve still scored four goals yesterday. Joel Matip hit the crossbar once and Mo salah struck both posts. Luis Diaz, who came off the bench, had a great chance too, but his shot was heroically blocked by Arturo Vidal.

Liverpool should be disappointed about losing the game, but they stepped onto the Anfield pitch last night with the aim of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League and they achieved that.

Klopp’s men next travel to Brighton on Saturday and although the Seagulls’ recent form hasn’t been great, Liverpool should be wary of the problems they are capable of causing.
