Pundit says 27-year-old Tottenham player has made him eat his words

Thomas Sorensen has named Guglielmo Vicario as the goalkeeper in his Premier League team of the season so far, while Mark Schwarzer admitted that the Tottenham Hotspur star has proved him wrong this term.

The pair were speaking on The Optus Spot Football Podcast, with Sorensen suggesting that he would pick the Italian ahead of Liverpool star Alisson in his team.

Guglielmo Vicario lauded after brilliant start at Tottenham

Tottenham fans may have had concerns when the club signed Guglielmo Vicario in the summer. He could hardly be considered a household name. And he was coming in to replace a club legend in Hugo Lloris.

Initially, Vicario probably went under the radar, particularly with so many of his teammates stealing the show. But he has produced some phenomenal performances in the early stages of the campaign.

Vicario was sensational in the dramatic loss against Chelsea, producing some world-class saves. And Tottenham appear to have produced a masterstroke in bringing him in in the summer.

Certainly, Vicario is looking like a bargain at £17 million. And Thomas Sorensen suggested that he has been in the best in the division in his position. Meanwhile, Mark Schwarzer claimed that the 27-year-old has proved him wrong.

“I think for me it was between [Alisson] Becker and Vicario. You look at the stats as well,” Sorensen told The Optus Sport Football Podcast.

“Firstly, you look at the eye test and I think they’ve both passed it and then the stats back it up as well.

“So, you can pick either. I think they both deserve to be in there. You know I picked Vicario because it’s always difficult to come into a new league.

“We’ve seen how other goalkeepers have struggled, Alisson Becker is just consistent so just for a little bit of new spice I’ve picked Vicario.”

Schwarzer added: “You know, I’ve eaten my words already, I’m going to eat them again.

“I wasn’t sure about Vicario, but I put him in my team so far as well.”

Spurs take little time to rebuild

Spurs appeared to be a team that was in disarray towards the end of last season. Many associated with the club probably could not wait for last year to end. And they must have feared that it was going to be a monumental task trying to close the gap on the leading sides in the Premier League anytime soon.

But they have definitely closed that gap under Ange Postecoglou. And with players such as Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson, they have a hugely talented group of players who should only improve in the coming years.

Certainly, there seems to be little reason why Vicario cannot be a stalwart of the Tottenham side for nearly the next decade.
