National team now call-up cover for £17m Tottenham player after what’s happened on international duty

Italy have called up cover for Guglielmo Vicario after the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper has come down with an illness.

The Azzurri took to social media on Tuesday morning and shared an update on the Spurs shot-stopper.

Guglielmo Vicario has been exceptional for Tottenham this season after making the switch from Empoli over the summer.

The 27-year-old has taken no time to adjust to the demands of Premier League football and the £17 million Spurs paid to sign him looks like a steal at this point.

Spurs have enjoyed a positive start to life under Ange Postecoglou but have been hit with significant injury blows over the past week.

Indeed, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven look set for spells on the sidelines until the new year.

Tottenham fans would be forgiven for fearing the worst after hearing Italy have called up cover for Vicario. But the Spurs goalkeeper has seemingly come down with a fever while on international duty.

Italy call up cover for Vicario

Italy posted an update on Vicario’s fitness on their official X account today.

They wrote: “Gianluca Mancini has been added to the group to replace the injured Bastoni.

“Furthermore, with Vicario experiencing fever symptoms, Carnesecchi has been called up as a precaution.”

The last thing Tottenham would need right now is yet another injury to a key player.

Cristian Romero isn’t set to return from his suspension until after the clash against Manchester City next month.

While Destiny Udogie is no longer suspended, he did miss out on the Italy squad due to an injury.

But it seems that Vicario should recover in time for Tottenham’s clash against Aston Villa next weekend.

Italy have stated they have called up cover as a ‘precaution’ and the Spurs goalkeeper remains part of the Azzurri squad.
