Another Van de Ven replacement at Tottenham has wowed N17 insiders – journalist

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is currently mulling over his defensive options ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture.

Spurs defenders Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are suspended, while Micky van de Ven suffered a hamstring issue which could keep him out long-term.

Eric Dier is all-but assured of coming in for Tottenham when they head to Wolves in Saturday’s early kickoff, but the question is who could partner him at centre-back.

Spurs summer signing Ashley Phillips seems like the most likely option. He wasn’t in the Tottenham Under-21s squad in midweek and has been training with the seniors.

Dean Jones, writing on GiveMeSport, says sources indicate that the 18-year-old has done well when among the Spurs first-team players in training sessions.

However, he also says “many close observers are actually more impressed by another 18-year-old – Academy star Alfie Dorrington”.

Jones added: “He is considered less likely to push for a start.

“Mainly given Phillips’ higher profile, physicality and previous first-team action with Blackburn in the Championship that would better prepare him for such a test.

“Yet insiders have indicated to GiveMeSport that Dorrington is considered by many to be a slightly better player than Phillips at this stage.”

‘Terrific’

Dorrington looks like an exciting talent and has earned rave reviews from the likes of Alasdair Gold.

The football.london journalist, speaking on a site Q&A in October, said the 18-year-old Spurs gem is a “terrific young defender”.

Dorrington has been at Tottenham for five years and has quickly risen through the ranks into the Under-21s.

While we’re unlikely to see him in action just yet, he may well be in the squad this weekend, and then it’ll be exciting to see how he develops.
