‘Unbelievable’ Spurs talent who could now replace VDV gets cheered for making big block from Veliz in training

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has a defensive selection headache ahead of their next Premier League fixture this Saturday.

Spurs duo Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are suspended, while Micky van de Ven suffered a hamstring issue expected to keep him out until the New Year.

Eric Dier is likely to fill in at centre-back for Tottenham against Wolves, but then it remains to be seen who could partner the Spurs veteran at centre-back.

One likely option seems to be Spurs summer signing Ashley Phillips, who has been training with the first-team this week ahead of the match.

On Thursday, the Tottenham media team shared footage on YouTube of the team at work at Hotspur Way, and the 18-year-old took part in the session too.

At 5 minutes 35 seconds in, Phillips can be spotted making a big block from Alejo Veliz, leading to a cheer and applause from the Spurs coaches.

Kulusevski reckons Phillips ‘will be ready’ for Tottenham

It’s good to see Phillips working hard and looking the part in training. There’s a good chance he could start and he looks like he has what it takes to step up.

Phillips is certainly no stranger to competitive senior football. When he joined Tottenham, he had already made 14 competitive appearances for Blackburn Rovers.

Tottenham teammate Dejan Kulusevski seems confident about the prospect of Phillips starting for the first team too.

The Sweden international told football.london earlier this week: “Yeah, probably he is ready.

“It is the coach that decides that, but I think every player is unbelievable in training.

“Everybody is ready, everybody wants to play and it is so high level, the training. So, if he will be called, he will be ready.”

It’ll be exciting to see how he fare should he make the XI against Wolves on Saturday.
