Ange Postecoglou calls up ‘phenomenal’ 18-year-old to Tottenham training pre-Wolves

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has a selection headache ahead of Spurs’ next Premier League encounter.

Tottenham play away at Wolves in Saturday’s early kickoff, and they have some personnel issues, particularly at the back.

Micky van de Ven picked up an injury in Monday’s loss to Chelsea, while Cristian Romero was one of two players sent off for Spurs.

Eric Dier is likely to start for Tottenham against Wolves, but then Postecoglou has to think about who could partner him in defence.

We may have just got the clearest hint yet as to who could come in at the back, or at least make up the numbers in the squad.

On Wednesday, Tottenham shared a video on X of the Spurs first-team squad making their way to the Hotspur Way pitches, and Ashley Phillips was among the players.

The 18-year-old joined Tottenham in the summer for a reported £3million, having already made 14 outings for Blackburn Rovers.

On Tuesday night, Spurs’ Under-21s were in EFL Trophy action at Cambridge United, but Phillips wasn’t in the squad. Now, we have another hint that he could feature on Saturday.

Phillips yet to make his Spurs debut, but alongside Alfie Dorrington, there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the pair.

‘So high level’

With Tottenham offloading Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga over the summer, Phillips is now their main back-up option after Dier.

And with Romero and Van de Ven both set to miss out, the ‘phenomenal‘ summer signing could well be in line for his Tottenham debut on Saturday.

Indeed, Dejan Kulusevski recently backed Ashley Phillips to step up for Tottenham in wake of what happened on Monday.

Kulusevski told football.london: “Yeah, probably he is ready.

“It is the coach that decides that, but I think every player is unbelievable in training.

“Everybody is ready, everybody wants to play and it is so high level, the training.

“So, if he will be called, he will be ready.”
