Tottenham signed 26-year-old after being willing to pay significantly more than Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur were prepared to pay significantly more than Arsenal to sign Richarlison during the 2022 summer transfer window.

That is according to a report from the Daily Mail, which notes that Spurs could end up paying Everton £60 million in the deal to land the Brazilian.

Tottenham were prepared to spend significantly more than Arsenal to sign Richarlison

Richarlison has had an interesting time since making the move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has only scored five goals in 46 games for the club in all competitions. And he struggled to put any real pressure on Harry Kane last season.

Kane’s departure this summer appeared to be the opportunity Richarlison needed. However, he has only scored once in the Premier League this season.

Tottenham fans would be forgiven for wondering whether Richarlison will ever come good in North London. And clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea may perhaps feel that they had a lucky escape.

The Daily Mail has suggested that Tottenham were prepared to pay significantly more than either club to sign Richarlison for an initial £52.5 million in 2022.

Spurs’ desire to sign Brazilian was understandable

You can understand why Spurs paid the money. Richarlison’s tally of 10 goals played a massive role in keeping Everton up in his final season at Goodison Park.

And he is someone who can play across the forward line. So he had the potential to get into the team while Kane was there, while also having the ability to come in for Kane if he had suffered an injury.

Unfortunately, things did not work out like that. And Richarlison has only shown flashes of his brilliance since making the move.

There is still time for Richarlison to prove himself and become a success at Tottenham. But Spurs must be worried about how wise it was to bring him in.
