Why Liverpool nearly talked themselves out of signing Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai has undoubtedly been one of the signings of the summer.

The Hungarian has hit the ground running in the Premier League, and it’s been truly impressive to watch him adapt to his new surroundings in such a manner.

At just £60m, the midfielder has proven to be quite the bargain for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but it’s a bargain they almost passed up on.

Indeed, speaking on the Walk On Podcast, James Pearce has been speaking about how this deal was done, and he says that Liverpool actually spent quite some time agonising over this move, due to the fact the £60m fee had to be paid largely up front in order to trigger the player’s release clause.

Liverpool agonised over Szoboszlai deal

Pearce shared what he knows about Szoboszlai.

“A lot of clubs asked the question, but because the deal was so weighted with the money up front with the £60m release clause, and that’s something Liverpool thought about. They didn’t just put the money up and it wasn’t a problem, they did agonise over that for quite a while,” Pearce said.

Right decision

It won’t have been easy for Liverpool to come to the decision to splash so much cash on Szoboszlai up front, but, in the end, the right call was made.

Indeed, that £60m fee seems like pittance now after the 23-year-old’s incredible start to life at Anfield, and the other teams that passed up on the midfielder must now be kicking themselves.

Liverpool were in a position where taking risks this summer was a huge gamble, but, luckily, on this occasion, this move has paid off to a huge degree, and now the Reds have one of the best midfielders in the Premier League in their side.
