Report: Celtic turn to free agent with 42 caps after release by English side

The Mail claim that Celtic are considering a move to sign free agent James McCarthy following the Irishman’s Crystal Palace exit. The midfielder was just one name on a long list of players to see his contract expire at Selhurst Park. Now, Celtic want to take advantage and sign McCarthy this summer.

McCarthy, 30, moved to Palace in the summer of 2019 after struggling to break back into the Everton side following a horrific leg break. In two seasons at Palace, he clocked up 51 Premier League appearances – but only 26 were starts. It has seen McCarthy fail to earn a permanent deal.

The 42-time Ireland man is now looking for a new club, and the Mail claim that Celtic want the boyhood Hoops fan. An opening-day defeat might be enough to convince the Celtic board to get moving in the transfer window. McCarthy would certainly be a sign of intent in the coming weeks.

Celtic transfer news: McCarthy a solid signing for Hoops

The advantages are that McCarthy knows what it means to be Celtic, without actually playing for the Hoops. On a free agent, Celtic also require central midfield additions – especially following the departure of Scott Brown. McCarthy massively improves Celtic’s options in midfield.

However, McCarthy has not really hit the hype since the leg break he suffered during a challenge with Salomon Rondon. A good player, but one that needs to play regular football again. Celtic could help him do that. TransferMarkt claim he has the same agent as Jack Hendry.

In other Celtic transfer news aside from McCarthy, fans have discussed whether they prefer Joe Hart or Ben Foster.
