Report: Celtic make decision about interest in James McCarthy

Celtic have reportedly decided to put the brakes on over their reported interest in Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy.

According to Eurosport, the Hoops have been looking at McCarthy as a potential target this summer.

It is understood though that Celtic could put that interest on the back burner because their manager Ange Postecoglou wants to target Shanghai SIPG’s Aaron Mooy.

McCarthy, who made 16 Premier League appearances last season for Palace, is now available on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old’s contract officially expires at Selhurst Park at the end of this month, so clubs can move to snap him up for free.

He’s had various injury problems during his career in England. However, a quality operator when fit.

The all-action central midfielder has impressed with Wigan Athletic, Everton and Palace. In addition, he started his career in Scotland with Hamilton.

Will Celtic regret overlooking McCarthy?

A fully fit McCarthy adds plenty to the Celtic ranks. But, potentially paying big wages for someone with bad injury luck makes little sense.

There is a need for some extra bite in the centre of the park following the exit of Hoops legend Scott Brown, so McCarthy would help fill that void.

He’s a great ball-player who’s aggressive with his tackling.

However, Celtic attention is turning to Mooy.
