Report: Arsenal loanee Lucas Torreira staying at Atletico, Fiorentina will revisit in June

Arsenal owned midfielder Lucas Torreira looks unlikely to be heading elsewhere before the transfer window shuts, according to reports in Italy.

The Uruguayan international was loaned out to Atletico Madrid at the start of the season but has struggled to secure regular first-team football with Los Colchoneros.

His situation saw Edu telling the Spanish press earlier this month about his concern regarding playing time for the Arsenal fringe player.

“The situation is very simple,” Edu explained to AS. “Arsenal are concerned about Torreira, his happiness, that he plays and that he’s well. We want to know about him, how he feels and, later, of course, know what Atletico think.

“For us, Lucas and his happiness is the most important thing. If everyone is happy, we will continue like this, if Lucas is not well, we will seek a change because there are many teams that are calling me to ask about the player’s situation.”

It also had teams across Europe interested, including Italian side Fiorentina. However, according to La Nazione, they have received short shrift in their attempts to perform a switch of loan clubs.

The report suggests that Fiorentina now plan on making a move for Torreira in June. That is because they have been informed on multiple occasions that the Spanish side have no intention of relinquishing the Gunners midfielder’s loan spell.

Diego Simeone is likely to want that extra cover in midfield as his side look in pole position to win La Liga silverware this season.

Arsenal’s future plans with Torreira are unclear but it seems unlikely he will be changing clubs before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow. Instead, Arsenal might be fielding offers from Fiorentina in the summer.
