Report: Aaron Long could seal Liverpool move after USA game, agent in talks

It appears that Liverpool have found their centre-back cover for the rest of the season in the form of New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long.

Liverpool have been on the hunt for a short-term solution to their injury troubles with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all sidelined by injuries.

It was reported by ESPN this week that the 28-year-old international could be on Liverpool’s radar as an experienced and affordable temporary solution.

Other names such as Issa Diop and Shkodran Mustafi have also been mentioned but reports Stateside suggest that Long is the option Liverpool are going for.

The USMNT captain will play for Gregg Berhalter’s national side against Trinidad and Tobago this weekend and a deal could then be finalised.

That is according to the Associated Press, who state that Long’s agent is discussing a loan move.

It seems the most progressed of any potential Liverpool defensive solution and considering the club’s links to the US getting a medical and paperwork done should not be an overtly preventative barrier. Securing a work permit may prove more difficult, considering the fact Long previously saw a move to West Ham collapse for that reason.

Long, who has 18 caps for his country, is a relatively late bloomer and is wanted by a host of clubs both in England and France. Liverpool clearly believe he might be worth a punt as their defensive solution.
