Jamie Carragher’s previous comments suggest he would frown upon Liverpool deal

Liverpool are in need of a new central defender with Joel Matip joining Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the treatment table recently.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has now admitted the club are looking to bring in a new defender before February 1st. Now, as reported by The Telegraph,  it seems that Arsenal misfit Shkodran Mustafi could be an option.

They claim that Liverpool ruled out most of the potential options linked with an Anfield switch but Mustafi was not immediately ruled out. He is a World Cup winner with ample experience who might be available on a free transfer.

Yet, it is a deal that would have one legendary Liverpool defender very disappointed.

Jamie Carragher has made no secret of his feelings about Mustafi’s defending in the past.

In April 2019, the Liverpool legend labelled him ‘a mess’ after a horror show display against Crystal Palace.

“I wasn’t surprised by this,” he told Sky Sports, as relayed by talkSPORT.

“He’s been a mess since he joined the club really and this is another example of it.”

In October that year, the criticism became even stronger, with Carragher believing that the German’s time in Premier League football was at an end.

“I think them days are gone – Mustafi playing in the Premier League…” Carragher told Sky Sports, as relayed by The Mirror. “I think once he goes it will be better for everyone at Arsenal.”

Unfortunately, for Carragher, it seems that Mustafi’s next stop could potentially be to his beloved Anfield.

Given the limited options available to Liverpool in their hunt for a new centre-back, Carragher may have to accept that beggars can’t be choosers if this unlikely deal does come to fruition.
