Celtic should try Callum McGregor in deeper role more often

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor is mainly deployed as an attacking midfielder in the number 10 role, but manager Brendan Rodgers should perhaps consider playing him in a deeper role more often.

The 25-year-old is a versatile midfielder that has become a mainstay in the Bhoys side, making 20 appearances across all competitions already this season.

But he’s guilty of being a passenger in some fixtures and can struggle to get into matches at times when he’s further up the pitch.

McGregor was used as a deep-lying playmaker in the 6-0 win over St Johnstone before the international break, where he managed to get himself on the scoresheet and also dictate play in the centre of the park.

The left-footed ace is most effective when he receives plenty of the ball and it suits him receiving possession from deep then driving forward.

He played in the shock 2-1 defeat to Israel on Thursday night for Scotland and once again struggled to make a serious impact in the advanced playmaker role.

The Celtic ace did drop deeper later in the contest and proved the point that he can be extremely useful in the midfield, something that Celtic should perhaps experiment with more often.

Rodgers does have a host of quality options in the midfield, but it could be worth him trying McGregor in a deeper role in some upcoming fixtures.
