17-year-old ‘wonderkid’ tracked by Celtic and Leeds United signs new contract at current club

With club business back underway, transfer talk is never too far away as Celtic look to strengthen the squad in the upcoming transfer window.

With Brendan Rodgers admitting he was looking to add more quality than projects to the side, the news that Celtic were tracking South African teenager, Luke Baartman, came as a bit of a surprise.

The youngster has been tipped as one of the best prospects to come out of the country but it seems that the interest may well cool after a report has suggested that Baartman has committed his future to his current club.

A report in South African publication, Soccer Laduma [print edition page 2] has said, “Cape Town Spurs have tied down one of the club’s emerging talents amid interest emerging both locally and abroad.

“The rumour mill has been buzzing this week with British publication The Scottish Sun reporting that Scottish Premier League outfit Celtic have been tracking 17-year-old Luke Baartman, while there has been interest from the EPL, with Leeds United understood to be monitoring his progress.”

Described as a ‘wonderkid’ by sports media outlet, Goal, Baartman is highly rated in South Africa and this update will no doubt come as a disappointment to Celtic and Brendan Rodgers.

The details of the deal are not yet known but The Sun claimed the youngster was one earmarked as having ‘big potential’ for the future and tone who could be used as a stepping stone into the South African market.

Baartman made his debut this season against the Orlando Pirates in a 2-1 win. He scored his first senior goal at Spurs in a 3-2 loss to the Kaiser Chiefs and that goal seems to have thrust him into the spotlight.

With four appearances for Cape Town so far, it is clear that he has a bright future ahead of him at such a young age and he is a player that TBR Celtic will keep a close eye on in the future.

In other news, Mark Guidi says he’s been told by people at Celtic that £3m summer signing is not good enough
