Kris Boyd thinks £2m star will be benched for Rangers against Celtic

Glasgow Rangers icon Kris Boyd says he doesn’t want Aaron Ramsey to start against Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday.

Writing in the Scottish Sun, Boyd feels “there is nothing to suggest” the Light Blues loanee can affect the game.

Sunday will see Scotland’s big two lock horns at Ibrox in an absolutely crucial derby for the Scottish Premiership title race.

Rangers currently sit three points behind leaders Celtic, so a win is absolutely crucial for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

Ramsey’s potential role in the Old Firm derby has been the subject of debate recently.

The Wales international arrived at Rangers to much fanfare in the January transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, the Gers paid Juventus a £2million loan fee for the midfielder’s services.

Ross Wilson described Ramsey as a “world-class player” and a “wonderful character” when he arrived at Ibrox.

It’s taken the 31-year-old a while to get up to speed but he started in Rangers’ last two games in all competitions.

He got 79 minutes against Dundee in the Scottish Cup on 13 March.

Ramsey then played 84 minutes against the same opposition in the Scottish Premiership a week later, and scored.

“Still only has three starts for Rangers”

The international break followed, and he helped Wales beat Austria 2-1 in their World Cup playoff semi-final.

Robert Page omitted Ramsey from the Dragons squad which played out a 1-1 friendly draw with Czech Republic.

This was to keep him fresh ahead of the Old Firm derby, admitted the Wales boss.

But despite Ramsey getting up to speed and not being risked in the Wales friendly, Boyd still doesn’t fancy him to start.

“Aaron Ramsey will also come into van Bronckhorst’s thoughts,” he wrote.

“But I expect he’ll stick with the midfielders he’s used in Europe.

“The Wales man scored against Dundee a fortnight ago but he still only has three starts for Rangers.

“So far, there’s nothing to suggest to me Ramsey is currently at a level where he can affect a vital match against Celtic.”
