Kris Boyd says Rangers have a player in their ranks who reminds him ‘so much’ of David Weir

Glasgow Rangers defender Filip Helander has made Kris Boyd’s Scottish Premiership Team of the Year following his efforts for the Ibrox side this season.

The 28-year-old, who has played a huge role in helping the Gers win their long-awaited 55th title.

Gerrard has rotated Helander and Leon Balogun over the course of the season, both partnering Connor Goldson very well in central defence.

The Sweden international has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Rangers this term, including 20 starts in the Premiership.

Sky Sports pundit and Ibrox icon Boyd selected nine Gers players in his season-best XI, and admitted he could’ve easily had the whole line-up made up of Light Blues players.

On the subject of his centre-back picks, he said: “It has helped Rangers that Connor Goldson is comfortable to start moves from the back.

“And Filip Helander reminds me so much of David Weir in terms of his understanding of the game. Everybody says he lacks a bit of pace but I’ve not seen him being done a lot this season.”

TBR View:

Helander may have had to make do with game time on a rotational basis this season but he’s done well for most of the season, enabling Gerrard to switch between him and Balogun seamlessly.

Given how many games Rangers have played this term and how little margin of error there normally is in a Premiership campaign, it’s just one of many things that have worked out so well for the Ibrox side.

And being compared to Weir, a player with over 200 competitive Rangers appearances under his belt and six trophies – as well as a Player of the Year award – won at Ibrox, that’s a real badge of honour.
