‘Bigger club’: Former Rangers star Kris Boyd in Celtic Mourinho dig

There are some pundits who will go to great lengths to appear neutral when appearing on TV or radio, restraining themselves when their former club scores and lavishing praise on that team’s rivals when they enjoy success.

And then there’s Kris Boyd.

During his playing days he enjoyed two spells at Rangers, scoring 138 goals in 234 games, and his love for the Ibrox club has clearly not diminished since hanging up his boots.

The former Kilmarnock, Middlesbrough and Portland Timbers man makes no secret of his affinity for Rangers, to the extent that a petition was posted on Change.org in February encouraging Sky Sports to remove Boyd from their coverage of Celtic games that also featured Rangers or Kilmarnock.

Boyd clearly revels in his status as a wind-up merchant, and his latest comments will have done little to endear him to the Celtic support.

Amid speculation regarding Jose Mourinho and the vacant Celtic managerial job, he told Sky Sports viewers on Wednesday night: “On the Jose Mourinho stuff, if Steven Gerrard was to leave Rangers he might want to come there because that’s a bigger club.

“But Celtic? Absolutely no chance.

“Let’s move on.”
