Report: Celtic boss Neil Lennon to hand Danny Simpson week-long trial

Danny Simpson will join Celtic on trial for a week as he bids to find himself a new club for the 2019/20 campaign.

According to The Scottish Sun, Hoops boss, Neil Lennon will let the free agent train with his squad next week.

Simpson has been without a club since leaving Leicester City at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old famously won the Premier League title with the Foxes in 2016.

Celtic are in desperate need of a right-back. Mikael Lustig has departed this summer and Kristoffer Ajer deputised in last night’s Champions League win over Sarajevo.

Simpson has played close to 400 games during his professional career, excelling with the Foxes, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers.

It will now be up to the player to prove he has the required quality to win a contract at Celtic Park.

TBR Verdict

Danny Simpson won’t have been the name on the lips of too many Celtic supporters as their favoured right-back signing.

The experienced performer wouldn’t command a transfer fee, but some supporters might have wanted a bigger name to arrive.

The ball is in Simpson’s court, however. If he is serious about winning another contract, then he must impress Lennon next week.

For the player, this would be a great move at this stage of his career.

He played just 10 games in all competitions last season and the chance to have a crack at the Champions League must really appeal to him.

If he can go to Celtic Park, get fit and get back to his best then he might just have a couple of successful years left in his legs just yet.
