Pat Nevin was seriously impressed with 24-year-old Celtic player’s ‘brilliant’ defending last night

I’m doing my best to find positives from Celtic’s performance against Atletico Madrid last night. I really am. So here is another from BBC pundit, Pat Nevin.

I brought to you earlier how Stuart Pearce pointed out Joe Hart‘s decent performance for the Hoops and here we have Pat Nevin absolutely loving what Liam Scales did last night for Celtic’s cause against the onslaught of Atletico Madrid.

The BBC pundit lavished praise on Scales for some of his defending but it was what he did during Alvaro Morata’s offside goal that delighted the Scotsman.

Nevin said [BBC Radio 5 Live], “I have to say, Scales, he just sprinted out hoping to catch him [Morata] offside. What a brilliant piece of defending there.

“He’s nowhere near the ball but he realises right in the midst of play, ‘I need get out of there.’

“He’s made a brilliant sprint out. He saved Celtic a goal. It was a goal. He was at left centre-back, the ball was 20 yards away from him.

“He had the presence of mind to know that, ‘Actually I’m a defender holding everybody on, get out!’
“And he did. Well done Scales.”

Scales has been of Celtic’s success stories for Brendan Rodgers. He has been in superb form for the Hoops this season. Coming in from the cold, the Republic of Ireland international defender has really produced both domestically and in Europe this season.

He certainly doesn’t look out of place in the Champions League and prior to last night’s result, Scales has held his own against some of Europe’s top strikers.

With his contract coming up for renewal in the next 18 months, surely Rodgers must be thinking about dealing him in as he has been one of his best performers this season.
