Gary Neville tears into £150,000-a-week Liverpool player vs Manchester City

Gary Neville has given his verdict on Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson’s role in the goal that Erling Haaland scored for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit was not impressed with Alisson.

So, what did Gary Neville say about Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, Manchester City took on Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

City are the defending Premier League champions and have established themselves as the dominant force in English football.

Liverpool have been City’s main challengers in recent years and are aiming to beat Pep Guardiola’s side to the title this season.

City and Liverpool have arguably the two best squads in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. The Norway international striker found the back of the net from close range.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville was on co-commentary duty for the match on Sky Sports.

Neville was not impressed by how Alisson failed to find Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah when the Reds were trying to launch an attack.

The £150,000-a-week (Spotrac) goalkeeper’s kick went straight to Nathan Ake, who eventually found Haaland for the goal.

Neville said in the 27th minute (Sky Sports Premier League, 12:57 pm, November 25, 2023): “This all emanated from a potential Liverpool attack where Salah was free on the pitch, but Alisson makes a mess of it.

“Ake, he goes past two players, and the difference between one man at one end, Nunez, and the other man at the other end, Haaland, this is what world class looks like.

“First touch – perfect. Second touch – even better. And the third is in the back of the net, and he puts his team in front. He gets a hand on it, Alisson, but it is past him.”

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson should have done better v Manchester City

In my view, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson should have done better with his kick from goal.

I believe that Alisson should have taken just a second extra to make sure that he connected with the ball the way he wanted to.

Of course, we know how good the Brazil international goalkeeper is with his feet. He does take risks and he is world class, but I think that he could have done better on this occasion.

In trying to facilitate a goal for Liverpool, Alisson ended up costing his team one.
