Report: Tottenham Hotspur did look at Ruben Dias but price-tag ‘far beyond’ financial capabilities

Tottenham Hotspur are still looking out for a new centre-back to help strengthen their options defensively for the rest of the season.

However, according to one report, there is one reported target who will not be on his way to Tottenham.

The player in question is Ruben Dias. It was recently reported by the Evening Standard that Jose Mourinho wants to bring his countryman to North London this summer. It was being suggested that Benfica’s recent failure to qualify for the Champions League, after a shock defeat to PAOK Salonika, meant Dias might now be available.

However, Football.London have cast considerable doubt on that potential deal. They report that Tottenham did indeed take a look at Dias as a potential signing. However, his price-tag is said to be ‘far beyond’ that of fellow target Milan Skriniar and Tottenham simply cannot afford such a fee.

The apparent valuation Tottenham have placed on the Inter Milan defender is £32 million, so Dias is seemingly priced at higher than that.

Manchester City are now said to be closing in on a deal for the Portuguese international and, according to Sky Sports, Dias will cost over £50 million, with Nicolas Otamendi potentially heading in the other direction.

Unfortunately, as Dias is an immense defensive talent, it seems he is simply not in the price range Tottenham can afford at present.
