Report: Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants defender Ruben Dias in summer

Benfica’s Ruben Dias is reportedly one of the players that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho wants to help revamp his defence for next season.

According to the Daily Express, the Spurs boss is looking at a £120million injection of youngsters during the summer transfer window to build a new backline.

It is understood that he is eyeing Dias from Portuguese top-flight club Benfica, but will face competition from Manchester City and Liverpool for his signature.

The report details that the centre-back has an £80million release clause in his Benfica contract after signing a new deal with them back in November, while the presence of his agent Jorge Mendes could work in Mourinho’s favour.

The Express adds Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, Norwich City’s Max Aarons, Nice’s Youcef Atal and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell all as potential summer targets.

TBR’s View:

There is no doubt that Spurs need rebuild for next season and Mourinho is already introducing some new faces to a group that was so familiar under former boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been a brilliant combination in the heart of defence for several years at Spurs, but they were never going to last forever.

Davinson Sanchez and academy product Japhet Tanganga are two talents that could replace them, but summer target Dias looks like he would be an excellent addition.

Dias is a ball-playing defender that is confident in possession, strong in the air, and that’s seen a lot of top clubs look at him.

The 22-year-old is already a vocal leader in the Benfica defence that is mature beyond his years and has all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League if he ends up in England.

He has already earned 17 senior caps for Portugal on the international stage and is one of the best young centre-backs in Europe right now.
