Report: Manchester City join race to sign Benfica defender Ruben Dias

Manchester City have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Ruben Dias.

According to The Mirror, Pep Guardiola is considering a January move for the Portugal international, following the decision not to bring in a replacement for Vincent Kompany in the summer.

So far in 2019/20, City have been exposed on a number of occasions at the back and that has contributed to them slipping eight points behind Liverpool.

John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are currently out injured, meaning midfielder Fernandinho is having to deputise alongside Nicolas Otamendi in defence, who has been in poor form.

Benfica defender Dias is under contract until 2024 at Estádio da Luz having signed a new deal last summer.

Dias, 22, would be a fine long-term acquisition by City, as he possesses a lot of traits valued highly by Guardiola.

He is a ball-playing defender, and this term he has proven pretty handy distributing from the back, with WhoScored reporting an 88.7% success rate in the league.

Dias is a fairly solid and composed defender, and has been key in Benfica only conceding three goals in seven Liga NOS matches so far this season.
