Wolves reportedly abandon pursuit of Benfica defender Ruben Dias

Wolves have moved away from a deal for Benfica defender Ruben Dias before the transfer deadline, according to the Express and Star.

The report says that the Portuguese outfit are under no pressure to sell because of the bumper fee they received for Joao Felix this summer.

Dias reportedly has a release clause of £57 million, and Wolves would not pay that, leaving the clubs too far apart in terms of their valuation to get a deal over the line before Thursday.

Interestingly, the report also outlines that Nuno Santo feels he’s got enough depth now to go into the new season with no transfer business imminent before the deadline.

Dias would have been a monster deal to get over the line – and Wolves’ defence is so good that it wasn’t an urgent priority before Thursday.

He may well go somewhere else and become a star but it’s understandable that Wolves have pulled out of a deal.

It may be more concerning to supporters that Santo is happy with his thin squad as Wolves gear up for a campaign in the Europa League, which is notoriously sapping.

Santo has earned the trust of the supporters – he will have a plan and that could well work – but it’s somewhat surprising that he doesn’t want any more before Thursday.
