Ex-Liverpool man admits there isn’t ‘overly too much wrong’ with Reds squad

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side could do with summer signings in the upcoming transfer window, but new additions aren’t a major necessity.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the ex-Premier League player admitted that, whilst the Reds could do with recruitments in defence and attack in the summer market, the overall squad has very few problems, and that injuries have been a major problem for the club this season.

Liverpool have already played the majority of the season without centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez due to injuries, and the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Trent Alexander-Arnold and captain Jordan Henderson have all had lengthy spells out on the sideline.

The reigning Premier League champions injury problems have been a big reason as to why they find themselves fighting for a top-four spot rather than for the title, but when asked about what Liverpool should do in the summer, Warnock was confident that the Reds would add in the off-season, but there isn’t too much work to be down.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “They’ll try and add players to the ranks, I think we’re talking about a centre-half, which they’ve been openly looking for. Then a centre-forward would likely be in the mix as well, and if Gini Wijnaldum is to leave the club, do they need a replacement in central midfield as well?

“I don’t think there’s overly too much wrong [with the squad] if I’m totally honest. You look at the centre-half options this season, that [injuries] would have impacted any team.”

It is easy to forget that not under 12 months ago this Liverpool team was being touted as one of the best in Premier League history, yet this season, injuries have absolutely derailed a year in which major players from the title-winning year have hardly kicked a ball this campaign.

Whilst the likes of Van Dijk, Gomez and Henderson will be back to full fitness for the start of next season, Liverpool need to be intelligent in the summer transfer market this year if they are to bring in new additions that can add extra depth and quality to the first-team should a similar situation arise in the 2021/22 campaign.
