‘Hasn’t really clicked yet’… Martin Keown not convinced by 24-year-old Liverpool player

Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo has been described as a “wonderful” player by Martin Keown.

However, the talkSPORT pundit also believes things haven’t “really clicked yet” for the Reds attacker at Anfield.

Keown was comparing the attacking setups at Liverpool and Arsenal, two teams with pretty impressive forward players.

The Reds boast the likes of Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota in their frontline ranks.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah.

‘Hit and miss’

TalkSPORT shared a video on X of Keown speaking to Jim White on the air and discussing the two clubs’ front lines.

“If we just look at the names and we look at those players individually, you could say that,” said Keown, presumably in response to the suggestion that Liverpool had the stronger attack.

“But not if they don’t go out and perform, not if they don’t show some consistency.

“You look at it, Gakpo, a wonderful talent – hasn’t really clicked yet. Jota has been injured for quite a lot of his time at Liverpool.

“Diaz has dealt with some really difficult things this season hasn’t he. We know that his father was kidnapped, what a horrific thing to go through.

“Nunez, incredible talent, but hit and miss in front of goal. So that needs to settle, if he really clicks then that looks good.

“Salah’s the one proven player, done it, he’s been there.”

Liverpool front line ahead of Arsenal attack at present

Keown is an Arsenal legend so you can understand why he’s leaning more towards the Gunners, but at the same time, his criticism of Liverpool seems a little harsh.

The Reds’ senior attackers are head and shoulders above their Gunners counterparts so far this season.

For instance, three Liverpool players have seven or more goals this term – and Salah is in double figures – while no Arsenal player has scored more than six yet.

Gakpo and Diaz both have as many goals as Jesus (four) and Martinelli has a mere two to his name.

We’ll see whether things change in the coming weeks but, for the time being, Liverpool’s front line is ahead of that of Arsenal.
