Dirk Kuyt thinks Liverpool could have a future 20-goal a season striker in their ranks

Liverpool icon Dirk Kuyt has now been speaking about Cody Gakpo’s arrival in England and what he can achieve in his time at the club.

Kuyt was speaking in a feature-length interview with The Athletic and admitted that Gakpo did arrive at a difficult time at Liverpool.

The Dutch legend reminisced his own struggles when he first arrived in England given the change in intensity.

However, Kuyt was confident that Gakpo could go on to be a huge success at Liverpool.

Kuyt said: “Cody arrived at a difficult time in January and had to go straight into the team.

“When I came to the Premier League, I dropped seven or eight kilos in the first few months because the intensity is so high here compared to Holland.

“Players need time to adapt.

“Cody has shown some quality moments and I think he can become a 20-goals-a-season player for Liverpool.”

And given these comments, Kuyt simply must believe that Liverpool will be title challengers once again this season.

If Gakpo is going to step up his goalscoring, he’d make a formidable partner for Mohamed Salah in attack.

Kuyt thinks Gakpo didn’t have much time to adapt at Liverpool

As Kuyt alludes to, Gakpo was needed pretty immediately in the Liverpool starting XI.

Jurgen Klopp was enduring something of an injury crisis at the time – as he often has in recent years.

However, when Gakpo imminently returns from his recent issue, he will now have time to find his feet properly.

And despite all of the options Klopp does have available, he seems very determined to start his £35m signing.

Perhaps he shares Kuyt’s confidence that Gakpo can go on to be a consistent goal scorer for the club.

Michail Antonio has recently claimed that Jarrod Bowen is the perfect replacement for Salah when he leaves Liverpool one day.

However, with Gakpo seemingly ready to take more responsibility, Klopp may be able to solve the issue internally.
