Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero has endorsed Aaron Ramsey’s deadline day move to Rangers.

The Welshman made the move to Ibrox in the final hours of the January transfer window. The switch to Scotland came as a shock, given his reported £400k a week wages in Turin, and the move was immediately dubbed the clubs ‘biggest signing since Gazza’.

Ramsey made 70 appearances for the Italian giants, registering six goals and six assists. His Juventus career was hampered with injuries, missing over 30 games in his three seasons at the club.

This season Ramsey had only made five appearances for Juventus accumulating 112 minutes of playing time. He had missed several games this season due to muscle issues and coronavirus. With the playoffs for the World Cup on the horizon, Ramsey was expected to make a move in January, reportedly to the English Premier League.

Ramsey signs for Rangers

Ramsey moved to Rangers on loan until the end of the season, a move that had not been expected until Fabrizio Romano broke the news on deadline day. Romano has since reported that Rangers have priority to discuss the permanent signing if they wish.

Manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst was thrilled with the signing saying to the club’s official website: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to add a player of Aaron’s quality, experience and leadership to our squad.

“As soon as it was mooted as a possibility, I was really keen for us to try everything to get the deal done, and huge credit must go to Ross and to the Board for the work they have put in on this.”

Del Piero favours the move

Juventus all-time top scorer Alessandro Del Piero has praised the move to Ibrox, speaking to the Daily Record, he said

“It is not easy, but it is important to play, to find rhythm and continuity.

“He is not yet 32 years old, and he still has an important phase of his career ahead of him. At Rangers he will find the right environment, and the right league, to relaunch his career. In Turin, this was no longer possible.

“We must not forget that Ramsey won a Scudetto and a Coppa Italia in a Juventus shirt. He played in decisive games in his first season, such as the victory against Inter in which he scored the first goal and provided a splendid assist for the second by Paulo Dybala.”

Since his move to Ibrox, Ramsey has made three appearances in his bid to find match fitness. He was introduced for the last fifteen minutes of victories against Edinburgh sides Hearts and Hibs respectively. Aaron was then given his first start for the club, playing 61 minutes in the cup tie against Annan Athletic. Ramsey had a backheel goal disallowed but did manage to create a goal in the win.

Aaron Ramsey will secure the title for Rangers if he remains fit – TBR view

An injury-free run of games will be key to getting the Welshman up to speed for the Championship run-in and he could be a potential game-changer for Rangers.

Speaking on Ramsey’s time at Juventus and his injury history, Alessandro Del Piero added: “A player like that is not used to being on the bench, or being in squad rotations, and I understand that. There were so many interruptions for injury reasons and now he wants to play as much as he can.

“Aaron Ramsey is an experienced and intelligent player, very flexible from a tactical point of view, because he can do almost everything: midfielder, attacking midfielder, attacking winger. He can manage ball possession well and is excellent with assists.

“He has only himself to fear, or the injuries that unfortunately tormented his time at Juventus.”

Rangers have needed a player like Ramsey for years. A midfielder who can do it all, particularly his goal threat. If he can stay fit then it would be very hard to argue against Rangers winning the League Championship.
