Marc Cucurella is one of two top summer targets for Manchester City amid reported interest from Tottenham.
The Times claim that Cucurella and Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips are the two players Pep Guardiola most wants to add to his squad when the window opens next month.
Earlier this month, a fee of £45 million was quoted for the Brighton defender, with Chelsea also interested as they look to revive their defence.
Tottenham’s interest has also been documented, although it remains to be seen how keen they are after signing Ivan Perisic, who is now a left wing-back.
Cucurella is a top City target
The report reads: Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has said that the Premier League champions will sign two more players this summer in the wake of landing Europe’s most coveted striker, Erling Haaland.
Although Al Mubarak did not mention them, City’s top two targets are believed to be Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and the Brighton & Hove Albion left back Marc Cucurella.
The City board secured the signing of Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this month and he will be joined by Julián Álvarez, from River Plate.
“I can confirm that there will be more players coming in,” Al Mubarak said. “We are looking to strengthen in the areas we need strengthening. I anticipate we will be doing a couple more. We will try to go as fast as we can but it depends on the market.”
Given their financial power and the fact they are in the running for every single competition they are in, it is hard for clubs to compete with City in the market.
£45 million is an affordable fee for them, and is in keeping with their transfer business in recent years, if you look at their record.
City need a left-back and Cucurella has shown this season that he is capable of bombing up and down that left flank all day long.
