PL star was inspired by early-2000s Arsenal and idolised Henry, now Arteta reportedly wants to sign him

Arsenal have been linked with Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko in recent days.

According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners have added the Ukraine international to their wishlist.

Arsenal may even consider a double swoop, as they’re eyeing Gabriel Jesus from the same club.

The Gunners need to bolster their ranks in several positions this season.

Midfield is one area Mikel Arteta is reportedly hoping to strengthen.

Though Mohamed Elneny penned a new deal, there’s certainly scope to bring in more strength in depth.

Arsenal could also do with bolstering their left-back ranks.

While Kieran Tierney is a superb first-choice, his injury layoff weakened Arsenal towards the end of the season.

Nuno Tavares struggled at times, leading to speculation suggesting Arteta wants to bring in someone new.

And according to the Mail, the Spaniard is reportedly hoping to sign Zinchenko for his midfield.

The 25-year-old plays in that position for Ukraine’s national team.

Then, if need be, Arteta could deploy Zinchenko at left-back.

Emotional connection with Arsenal

As per The Independent, Zinchenko grew up watching the vintage Arsenal team of the early 2000s.

‘Zinchenko’s love of playing was inspired by watching early-2000s Arsenal, with Thierry Henry his favourite player.’

And in 2014, Arsene Wenger reportedly tried to sign the player when he was at Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, Arsenal failed to land Zinchenko, who went on to join City in 2016.

He has made 128 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, winning 11 trophies in sky blue including four Premier League titles.

But the prior links between Zinchenko and Arsenal are there – can Arteta finally succeed in getting him at the Emirates?
